Pexels is the default answer for free B-roll, and deservedly so. The Pexels License allows commercial use without attribution, the search and curation are the best of the free libraries, 4K is plentiful, and the portrait filter makes vertical footage easy to find for short-form work.

It is also the free library the rest of the industry builds on: several AI editing tools, Jupitrr’s free tier included, source their free stock from Pexels. The main limits are the standard ones: no reselling unaltered clips, no implying endorsement by people or brands who appear in them.

Pixabay, from the same company as Pexels, covers more media types in one place: stock video, photos, illustrations, vector graphics and music. For B-roll that mixes footage with supporting stills or graphic elements, that breadth is convenient.

The Pixabay Content License allows commercial use without attribution, with two cautions worth knowing: content containing recognizable trademarks or logos is excluded from commercial use, and clips cannot be resold standalone. Sponsored iStock results sit at the top of searches, so check you are downloading the free clip and not clicking an ad.

Mixkit, run by Envato, is a smaller but tightly curated library: HD and 4K clips, a dedicated vertical category, and no signup or watermark anywhere. For grabbing a clean clip in seconds, it has the least friction of any library here.

The catch is licensing granularity: most clips carry the Free License allowing commercial use, but some carry a Restricted License limited to personal, non-commercial projects. The license is labeled on each clip page, so a two-second check before downloading keeps you safe.

Coverr has spent a decade building themed collections that map well to business and lifestyle B-roll: workspaces, city life, nature, wellness, and a dedicated vertical section for short-form. Commercial use is allowed with no attribution and no signup.

Two quirks are worth knowing. Its license explicitly prohibits using the clips to train AI models, an unusual clause among free libraries. And premium content, including iStock partner results, appears alongside the free clips, so mind which one you are downloading.

Videvo, now part of the Freepik family, has one of the largest free-clip catalogs, alongside motion graphics and sound effects. If the other libraries do not have your subject, Videvo often does.

The trade is licensing complexity: free clips do not all share one license. Some are royalty-free with no credit needed, others require attributing the author, and the license shows on each clip page. Premium clips are mixed into search results too, so downloading from Videvo means reading before clicking.
