MKV to MP3 Converter

Why use Jupitrr's MKV to MP3 converter?

Audio from long recordings

Only the audio is processed, so even hour-long OBS recordings convert quickly.

Never uploaded

Your MKV file is converted inside your browser and never leaves your device.

Free, no watermark

No signup, no install, and nothing added to your file.

How it works

Choose a MKV file

Drop a MKV video up to 1 GB onto the converter, or pick it from your device.

Pick the audio quality

Choose 128, 192, 256, or 320 kbps depending on whether the audio is speech or music.

Extract and download

Your browser drops the video track, encodes a real MP3, and lets you preview it before downloading.

How does MKV to MP3 conversion work?

Get the sound out of a Matroska file.

MKV (Matroska) files from OBS and other recorders usually carry AAC or Opus audio alongside the video. Converting MKV to MP3 takes the first audio track, decodes it, and encodes it as an MP3.

MKV files from movies and Blu-ray rips often use DTS or AC-3 surround audio, which browsers cannot decode. Those files will report that no usable audio was found.

When to reach for it

Podcasts recorded in OBS

Publish the audio of a video podcast or stream.

Streams and VODs

Keep the commentary of a recorded stream as audio.

Tutorials

Turn a recorded walkthrough into a listen-anywhere file.

Transcription

Send a light audio file instead of a large MKV.

Frequently asked questions

Which audio track is used if my MKV has several?
The first audio track in the file. If you recorded separate tracks in OBS, such as microphone and desktop audio, the first track is the one converted.
Can I convert MKV to MP3 in Safari?
Safari cannot open MKV files, so use Chrome or Edge on Mac or Windows.
Which MP3 bitrate should I choose?
Choose 128 kbps for speech and the smallest file, 192 kbps for a balanced result, or 256 to 320 kbps when music detail matters more than file size. A higher bitrate cannot add detail the source audio never had.
Is my MKV file uploaded to a server?
No. The MKV file is read and converted by your browser on your device. It is never sent to Jupitrr, and closing or refreshing the tab clears the working files.
Is there a file size limit?
Files up to 1 GB can be converted. Larger files can run out of browser memory, so trim or compress very long recordings first.
