The re-hook

And what I realized was there was still a lot of things in my life that I wanted to do other than just build a business.

Widens the story from a health scare into a relatable realization about over-focusing on work.

Why it works

The video works because it opens mid-crisis with a visceral, high-stakes moment (“thought I was having a heart attack”) that immediately hooks attention and emotion. It then pivots into a universal founder pain point—over-identifying with the business—and offers a concrete, unexpected outlet (pilot training) as the symbol of reclaiming life. The structure mirrors a mini hero’s journey: crisis → realization → new quest, which makes a simple update feel meaningful and shareable among ambitious, overworked audiences.

Swipe-file takeaways

  • Open your founder story at the emotional peak (health scare, breaking point) rather than with background context.
  • Tie a personal crisis to a broader insight your niche feels (e.g., overworking, neglecting life outside the business).
  • Use a vivid, specific new pursuit (like pilot training) as a metaphor for growth and balance, not just a hobby mention.
  • Frame late-career or mid-journey learning as exciting and challenging to inspire peers rather than to brag.
  • Keep it tight: one core story, one realization, one concrete action so the message is easy to remember and repost.

Full script

A few years ago, I thought I was having a heart attack. And what I realized was there was still a lot of things in my life that I wanted to do other than just build a business. And one of those was to learn how to fly an airplane. So I am currently working on my private pilot's license, which I'm super stoked about. It would give me the opportunity to get back and forth the Outer Banks, which is one of my favorite places a lot faster. But it's been challenging and a lot of fun. And it's really cool at this phase of my life to jump into something so uniquely different than what I do day in and day out to continue to challenge me, honestly, to grow.
